Gleich Dances: Performances and Criticism

New York-based Gleich Dances was founded in 1996 by choreographer Julia K. Gleich who has created nearly 50 works for regional ballet companies, colleges, private schools and her own company. Her dances merge classical ballet with contemporary forms. Funded by public and private grants and donors. Selected collaborators include:

§ The Wal-Mart Ballet and Rouses Point Fete de Danse featured Gleich Dances in the Wal-Mart parking lot and dancing on a purpose-built stage in a skating rink, respectively. The Wal-Mart Ballet received critical acclaim for its unique setting and juxtaposition of elements. (see review attached) Fete de Danse with an audience of over 300 benefited the Rouses Point Historical Society.

§ Gleich has performed in lectures on Rudolf Laban for Dr. Valerie Preston-Dunlop, and performed Ghost (for Martin) and Alluvion at the Bonnie Bird Theatre – both at Laban in London.

§ Midsummer Celebration: Arts and the Mind. Gleich collaborated with Susan Sentler, creating a classical pas de deux that was morphed into Graham Technique for an exploration of creativity, the arts and the brain at the Dana Center in London.

§ Gleich Dances’ New York City seasons were held at Joyce SoHo January 2001 and 2003.

§ In 1999 Gleich Dances was produced by the Virginia Waterfront Wave International Arts Festival and was named a “Best Pick” by The Beacon. Gleich's work was also produced in 1999 by the Rivertowns Arts Council, Dobbs Ferry, NY in EDGE alongside well-known choreographers, Pascal Rioult, Zvi Gotheiner, Robert Battle, Chris DC Ramos, Heidi Latsky.
