Esprit de Corps de Boogie

Choreography by Julia K Gleich

Ballet is breaking out in this playful slant on tradition. Professional dancers and volunteers perform traditional group (corps de ballet) choreography, from which individuals break free until everyone is part of a celebration of ballet as a boogie dance. Music ranges from classical to pop and rock.

Who: Anyone. Some movement/dance experience of any kind useful, but you do not need training. You should like to move. You need to be able to stand and pose for at least 8 minutes and to be able to dance however you like for about 4 minutes.

What: A 30 minute performance on and off the stage at Astor Place.

Guided by professional company dancers, you will perform, along with other volunteers:

·      a short section from La Bayadère's Kingdom of the Shades entrance. This is an 8 step phrase repeated many times in a chain (or kind of conga line).

·      a set pose on stage with a transition into arabesque.

·      a free dance section - to pop music (TBA) - in whatever style you like.

·      some backing dancing is optional.

You will wear all white (tutus are welcome but definitely not required) and one item that has a color. You can dance in almost anything you wish--tutus to bikinis to street clothes--as long as you can move. (I will bring some white tulle and other bits to play with.) Sneakers are probably the best footwear, but jazz shoes or other shoes which are fairly comfortable will do. You will be dancing both on a marley floor on the stage and on the street. No shoes with spike heels or that might damage the marley flooring.

When: You must attend 2 rehearsals from below and be available for show day at 8am.  (The phrases can be studied from video.)
